When you think of a mall, what comes to mind? For many, it’s a bustling hub filled with shoppers, food courts, and the latest fashion trends. However, when I embarked on my ethnographic observations at a local mall, I found that it was so much more than just a shopping destination. It served as a microcosm of society where diverse cultural interactions unfold every day. This essay explores my observations and insights gained through this lens.
The Mall as a Cultural Space
Malls are often considered temples of consumerism, but they also function as social arenas where different cultures intersect. As I sat in the food court—a popular gathering spot for families and friends—I observed people from various backgrounds sharing space, stories, and meals.
