In the early years—specifically from birth to about age two—children are in what Piaget termed the sensorimotor stage. During this phase, infants explore their environment through their senses and actions; they learn that their actions can produce results.

As I observed my niece during her first year, I was struck by how she learned to grasp objects and understand cause-and-effect relationships. For instance, when she would shake a rattle and hear a sound, it sparked her curiosity; she would repeat this action over and over again.
