Why I Chose Spain
Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, and when the opportunity to spend a semester in Spain presented itself, I jumped at the chance. The allure of vibrant culture, rich history, and mouthwatering cuisine was simply too hard to resist. As an international relations major, I believed that immersing myself in a different culture would not only enhance my academic experience but also help me grow as a person. Little did I know just how unforgettable this journey would be.
The Arrival: First Impressions
When I first landed in Madrid, the bustling energy of the city was palpable. It was unlike anything I had experienced before—the sounds of chatter in Spanish filled the air, street performers entertained passersby, and the aroma of churros wafted through the streets. My initial impression was that Spain had its own unique rhythm; it felt alive! After settling into my host family’s apartment—an experience that came with its own set of challenges—I began to feel excited about all that lay ahead.
Cultural Immersion: A Journey Beyond the Classroom
One of my most rewarding experiences during my time in Spain was engaging with local customs and traditions. My host family welcomed me with open arms, introducing me to their way of life which included late dinners, siestas, and passionate conversations about everything from politics to soccer. They taught me how to make traditional paella—a delightful dish made from rice, saffron, chicken, seafood, and an array of spices—an experience that deepened my appreciation for Spanish culture.
Attending classes at a local university also provided incredible insight into cultural differences in education systems. In contrast to my home institution where lectures dominate learning styles, classes in Spain emphasized group discussions and collaborative projects. This shift challenged me academically but also encouraged more meaningful interactions with classmates who hailed from various backgrounds.

One thing you hear often about studying abroad is the importance of language immersion—and boy were they right! Initially nervous about speaking Spanish beyond simple phrases like “hola” or “gracias,” I quickly realized that using the language daily—even if it meant making mistakes—was crucial for improvement. My progress felt slow at first; however, as weeks went by and conversations flowed more naturally at cafés or markets around town, I began to gain confidence.
I even took part in tandem language exchanges where English speakers met with Spanish speakers looking to improve their skills. These evenings turned out to be some of my favorite memories as we’d share laughs over our mispronunciations while forging friendships that crossed borders!
Exploring Beyond Borders: Weekend Adventures
Spain’s geographical diversity offered endless opportunities for weekend getaways after hectic weeks filled with studies and socializing. Some weekends were spent exploring iconic cities like Barcelona—where Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces left me breathless—or Seville—with its stunning Alcázar palace shining under sunlight on warm afternoons.
Of course, each trip came packed with unique experiences ranging from trying tapas (small plates) bursting with flavor to dancing flamenco until dawn! Traveling within Europe also opened up new avenues for exploration as low-cost airlines made spontaneous trips feasible on a student budget.
A Lasting Impact: Personal Growth
This study abroad experience profoundly impacted my worldview—not only did it enrich my understanding of international relations but also fostered immense personal growth within myself. Living independently challenged me; there were moments when homesickness set in or when navigating public transport proved daunting—but overcoming these obstacles strengthened resilience and adaptability.
I discovered newfound passions during this journey too—from photography capturing breathtaking sunsets across European landscapes—to diving deeper into global political discussions alongside peers from diverse backgrounds which ignited intellectual curiosity like never before!
